Eight floors. 50,000 square feet. “A monster megaplex” featuring shop-in-shops by the likes of Alexander Wang, Boy by Band of Outsiders, D.A.P. Books, Other Music, Trash & Vaudeville, and The Row. Welcome to Opening Ceremony, Japan. The store OC founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim have built in the heart of Tokyo’s Shibuya shopping district is no effing joke, to put it bluntly. Opening on the 30th, the store features “all the classic Opening Ceremony product,” as Leon says, plus a bevy of launch exclusives, the aforementioned shop-in-shops, plus a few others, and a restaurant called Potluck that’s about to make “brunch” trendy in Japan. “We wanted to focus on the experience as much as the merchandise,” Leon explains. “Every floor has its own point of view. Going through the store is kind of like getting a tour of American architecture throughout the ages—like, the first floor is Santa Fe/Southwestern, then there’s a floor referencing sixties modernist architecture, and another one that’s seventies hippie…” There is also, Leon notes, a floor made to look like a typical American office. Those cubicles ought to make an interesting backdrop for the Opening Ceremony opening bash, at which Strokes-man Julian Casablancas will be playing songs off his forthcoming solo LP. The party’s not until the 29th, so there’s still plenty of time to book a flight.

Since my ancestors hail from Germany (well, some of them; I’m a complete American mutt), I experienced a sense of pride coming to Mercedes-Benz Berlin Fashion Week, where designers were showing their Spring/Summer 2010 collections a full two months before the same season starts in New York. Yes, we are an organized, responsible people. The re-launch of Boss Orange on Thursday night was my first show, and while the venue was miles away, the provided transportation was meager, and the publicists at the door were very far from friendly, the collection had some peppy elements, like his-and-her denim and cute T-shirts with sequined ball skirts, not to mention a front row that included VIPs Sienna Miller and Adrien Brody, the latter of whom was working a tight cardigan with nothing underneath but a bandanna. On Friday afternoon, Peek & Cloppenburg Düsseldorf’s Designer for Tomorrow presentation—Germany’s answer to Project Runway—showcased eight finalists from a pool of more than 150 applicants and proved that Berlin is a city to keep an eye on. Later that night, you couldn’t help but keep an eye on the Michalsky show. What the clothes lacked in originality, the theatricality of the production more than made up for: Designer Michael Michalsky set up a Broadway-worthy stage complete with upside-down cars and a runway with a moat. I put on my tourist hat to see Knut the famous baby polar bear at the Berlin Zoo. Sadly, Knut ain’t a baby anymore, nor is he as cute, but a young elephant called Ko Raya, who has taken up residence at the zoo, fits that description. The highlight of the week, though, was seeing the legendary Veruschka at Kai Kühne. She looked severely chic (or chicly severe) in a full-body jersey thing, which had a turtleneck that rolled up rather fittingly into a dramatic hood.

What with throwing last month’s BCBG-sponsored Art Party and hosting last week’s intimate Lou Reed concert, the Whitney has been feeling awfully chic of late. Cue Donatella Versace, who stilettoed into the museum this afternoon to make that three for the trend. The occasion was the launch of Art Unites, an initiative from Versace and the Whitney committed to bringing art to children in need. Drawing was on the day’s agenda, but Versace, a self-declared non-sketcher, left the art-making to the experts: namely, some really adorable kids from the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which benefits children with chronic or life-threatening diseases. Wielding Magic Markers, the youth set worked on drawings while the designer worked the room. “She seems really nice,” one budding artist concluded after Versace left her table in an aura of flashbulbs. The drawings, 900 in all, along with those created by children from Jet Li’s One Foundation in China, will be made into one-of-a-kind tote bags available this fall online from Gilt Groupe, and will retail for $200 to $250. In addition to being made into Versace bags, two drawings chosen by Donatella will make their way (and not necessarily in tote bag form) into Versace’s Fall RTW show. “I’m not looking for talent or theatricality,” Versace said of eventually picking the winners. “I’m looking for emotion.” Her future design collaborators had been told as much. “I’m looking forward to seeing what you make today,” she told the assembled group, “and I hope it comes from the heart.”
