New York nightlifers may know Mandy Coon as one half of the DJ duo Two Mandy DJs. Those who meet the pixie-ish Coon during daytime hours, however, have probably figured out that she has a foothold in the fashion world as well; among other gigs, she’s played design helpmeet to Camilla Stærk. Now Coon is going solo—style-wise, at least. Coon is launching a new label for Spring ‘10 and unveiling the eponymous line at a presentation at New York fashion week. “I know you’re not supposed to say this, but honestly, I’m making the clothes I want to wear,” she explains. Fine by us, inasmuch as the clothes Coon is stitching up include geometric layered jersey jumpsuits and tops, a zipped fitted dress that converts into a jacket and skirt, and sculptural dresses ruffled in distressed leather. “It’s not a soft ruffle,” she notes. “I was looking at pictures of crystal when I started the collection, and I’m trying to achieve that same kind of jagged quality.” Her own wardrobe preferences aside, Coon has made the odd concession to the girl who’s not quite ready to wear an abbreviated, tiger-striped smock that floats off the body like meringue. “That’s a lot of volume for an animal print,” she says with a laugh. “Which I’m into, but maybe some other people would rather have an oversized tee in that print. Anyway,” Coon adds, “I’d wear that, too.”

If you aren’t all jazzed up about Fashion’s Night Out yet, the PSA, which just went live on www.vogue.com, should do the trick. With Diddy rapping, “Come on, let’s do it for the people, baby,” how could it not? Speaking of music, we hear that the Rodarte sisters have recruited the drag queen Justin Bond, a.k.a. Kiki of Kiki & Herb, to perform at their personal appearance at Barneys. It seems as if every square foot of the Madison Avenue store will be covered with designers, models, and showbiz types, but in particular we’re looking forward to catching the premiere of Coco Rocha’s “Fashionista” video, dropping by the Alabama Chanin sewing circle, and getting our copy of the new book Isabel Toledo, Fashion From the Inside Out, signed by the woman herself. Fashion Wire Daily – What brings fashion designers running? If you’re in New York City on a hot summer night, it is Renee Zellweger, who stars in the new film “My One and Only.” The premiere of that Fifties-era comedy drew a who’s who of well-known couturiers on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Eight floors. 50,000 square feet. “A monster megaplex” featuring shop-in-shops by the likes of Alexander Wang, Boy by Band of Outsiders, D.A.P. Books, Other Music, Trash & Vaudeville, and The Row. Welcome to Opening Ceremony, Japan. The store OC founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim have built in the heart of Tokyo’s Shibuya shopping district is no effing joke, to put it bluntly. Opening on the 30th, the store features “all the classic Opening Ceremony product,” as Leon says, plus a bevy of launch exclusives, the aforementioned shop-in-shops, plus a few others, and a restaurant called Potluck that’s about to make “brunch” trendy in Japan. “We wanted to focus on the experience as much as the merchandise,” Leon explains. “Every floor has its own point of view. Going through the store is kind of like getting a tour of American architecture throughout the ages—like, the first floor is Santa Fe/Southwestern, then there’s a floor referencing sixties modernist architecture, and another one that’s seventies hippie…” There is also, Leon notes, a floor made to look like a typical American office. Those cubicles ought to make an interesting backdrop for the Opening Ceremony opening bash, at which Strokes-man Julian Casablancas will be playing songs off his forthcoming solo LP. The party’s not until the 29th, so there’s still plenty of time to book a flight.

Steven Klein’s Bridgehampton farm is the place to be tonight. That’s the photog’s Great Dane in the accompanying pic. We hear that Lindsay Lohan, among other boldfacers (maybe Courtney Love?) is expected at Heat, a benefit for the new Ellen P. Hermanson Breast Health Center at Southampton Hospital that our executive fashion director Candy Pratts Price is co-chairing. We’ll have the full scoop and all of the party photos on Monday.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie stopped traffic on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles on Monday, Aug. 10, as they joined Quentin Tarantino at the premiere of “Inglourious Basterds.”

Karl Lagerfeld stepped out in Saint-Tropez yesterday (avec entourage, bien sur) looking decidedly more covered than the average vacationer. Now, we’re not saying the Kaiser should go full Speedo on us—ahem, Giorgio Armani—but a tightly buttoned shirt, heavy boots, and leather gloves? Is this a bit too extreme for August on the Côte d’Azur or is Karl just the ultimate fashionisto?
