Edmundo Castillo Steps Back In Time

For centuries the espadrille was relegated to peasant status, and since 1927 the Spanish shoe company Castañer was content producing jute-soled footwear for country-dwelling Catalonians. That is, until the sixties, when Yves Saint Laurent went to the brand with a sketch of a previously unheard-of heeled espadrille, and the resulting collaboration kicked off a fashion frenzy for the humble slip-on. Today Castañer is the go-to manufacturer for any designer looking to add woven wedges to his or her collection. And now Edmundo Castillo, formerly of Sergio Rossi, is on board reinterpreting some of the brand’s classic pieces. First up? The shoe that started it all. This YSL-inspired ballerina-style design is a bit heftier than other wedges, making it an ideal piece to bridge the summer-fall gap, while adding a bit of history to your wardrobe.

$175, available at Castañer boutiques worldwide.
